INTERVIEW - Craig Redman

Thanks to the glorious power of the internet, I recently got in touch with Australian artist, Craig Redman. Craig and his friend Karl are responsible for some of the most exciting illustration and design going round. In between living the dream in NYC, collaborating with some of the biggest names and brands in the world, Craig kindly took the time to give a snapshot of what he is up to and a link to arguably the most disturbing/hypnotic video on youtube.

A nice well-worn question to start, what inspires you and your work?

Luckily I have a well-worn answer in response - New York. It could be some crazy dude screaming at a hot dog vendor on my way to the studio in the morning, or a ridiculously designed flyer in Chinatown or a outrageously high production show in Chelsea that triggers a new idea.

Your work with your character, Darcel, manages to neatly capture a lot of life’s little miseries (and victories), if there is one image that sums up your mood at the moment what would it be?

You have an enviable list of collaborators, which collaboration has been your favourite to date?

Probably the remix with Part & Parcel, they really took it to new levels and at the same time stamped their style all over Darcel.

If you could collaborate with anyone else who would it be and why?

I'm desperate to do a collaboration with Crazy Frog. Anyone have any leads?

Your Darcel clips feature great backing tracks, what music have you been listening to lately?

All Darcel's music is done by my amazing friend Oli Chang, he really takes the animation pieces to new levels. My own music tastes are total hipster cliches - My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, Sonic Youth etc. Sorry, I know, I know!

What are 5 things you couldn’t live with out?

iPhone, sleep, Downtown, coffee, booze.

Any upcoming projects we should look out for?

Darcel just finished a few furniture pieces with Parisian craftsmen LAQ (here), he also has some t-shirts coming out in the next month with Adidas. I've just launched a new site with my friend Karl Maier (here)

Last but not least, favourite video on youtube?
